Legislative Inconsistency Amid Societal Chaos

In a time of chaos and confusion while dealing with COVID-19 and protests, we look to our leaders for guidance. However, those leaders are part of the problem. You can find them joining protests around the country. All the while, those same leaders are dictating restrictions and Phases in the reopening of states. So, which actions of those leaders do we listen to? The enacting of new laws or the disregarding of the same laws? It’s hypocrisy!

The coronavirus killing nearly 120,000 Americans was the fuel behind the fire for multiple legislative precautions and regulations aimed to prevent the spread of the virus, including social distancing and the wearing of masks. For months now, Americans have been ordered to stay inside, social distance, and refrain from gathering in groups of ten or more, lest they break the law. The political figureheads for these regulations emphasized the importance of doing these actions. While the right to peaceful protest is an important part of being an American, one must recognize the hypocrisy of months and months of relentless regulation being thrown away at the drop of a hat, completely disregarded, while hundreds of individuals, INCLUDING THIOSE SAME POLITCIANS, gather together in extremely close quarters…many without facemasks.

While many protesters are claiming that the fight against injustice and brutality outweigh the risk of getting sick, one must ask, how will sick individuals fight for the issues that they deem important? On top of that, if the risk for spreading COVID-19 was so present those politicians who implemented regulations that effected the economy, particularly small businesses, why all of a sudden can those regulations be immediately disregarded, especially by the ones who put them in place? In a time of so much uncertainty, consistency is the name of the game; what we have seen, however, is laws being established and broken at random based on the political winds at hand.

As we take the time to keep up with the news, we struggle with our belief in our leaders to guide us through the pandemic and protests effectively. What we can believe is that others will take notes from the hypocrisy that we are experiencing and strive to do better and set a greater example for those of us looking on.
